Ongoing Trials With Lipid-Modifying Agents
(Prevention of Cardiovascular Events)

Trial - CORONA
Crestor Versus Placebo in Subjects with Heart Failure

Outcome: Combined endpoint of cardiovascular death or non-fatal myocardial infarction or non-fatal stroke (time to first event)

Expected total enrollment: 5013 patients with chronic symptomatic systolic heart failure (of ischaemic aetiology) and with optimal therapy for this condition.

Comparisons: Rosuvastatin vs placebo.

Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo control, parallel assignment.

Trial - ARISE
Agressive Reduction of Inflammation Stops Events

Outcome: Length of time to the first occurrence of one of six adjudicated events: cardiovascular mortality, resuscitated cardiac arrest, non-fatal MI, non-fatal stroke. hospitalization for angina pectoris, or use of coronary revascularization

Expected number of patients:
6000 patients with acute MI or unstable angina > 14 days and ≤ 1 year prior to randomization, and either with diabetes mellitus (type 2 or type 1), or ≥ 55 years and with one additional risk factor [(i) ≥ 60 years; (ii) low HDL-C: <40 mg/dL for men and <50mg/dL for women; (iii) previous MI (in addition to the index event), or diagnosis of atherosclerosis in a non-coronary vessel (e.g. history of prior stroke, presence of peripheral vascular disease); (iv) prior history of congestive heart failure or ejection fraction <40%].

Comparisons: Probucol analog vs placebo.

Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo control, parallel assignment.

Mission of the Metabolic
Syndrome Institute

Created in 2003, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute is an independent and not for profit association. Its members are international experts in lipid metabolism, diabetes, heart disease, endocrinology obesity, genetics, epidemiology, basic research and health economics. Being the first association totally devoted to the dissemination of knowledge about the metabolic syndrome, the Metabolic Syndrome Institute will provide an international multidisciplinary approach to a worldwide public health problem.
