It is a commonly held view that diabetes prevalence is much lower in rural vs urban environments, although such a dichotomy may prove of lesser relevance in an increasingly globalized world. This cross-sectional survey, conducted during 2004-2006, was designed to estimate the prevalence of diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in hypertensive rural Chinese, using a cluster multi-stage sampling design. A total of 6412 hypertensive subjects were included in the analysis. While the prevalence of diabetes was 10%, the prevalence of IFG was 26% when using the new American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria, and 9.7% when using the 1997 ADA criteria. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed age, male gender, systolic blood pressure, overweight or obesity, total cholesterol and triglycerides to be risk factors for diabetes.
