Paediatric hypertriglyceridaemia as a significant predictor of young-onset adult cardiovascular disease
The authors conducted 22- to 31-year follow-up studies in former schoolchildren who had first been studied in 1973-1976 in order to assess the relationship between paediatric lipid profile and subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the fourth decade of life. Paediatric and adult body mass indexes were compared in 19 cases with at least 1 CVD event and in 789 CVD event-free subjects. The major novel finding of the study was that childhood triglycerides (TG) were consistently and independently associated with young-onset adult CVD. The distributions of both childhood and adult TG were shifted to higher levels in the cases compared to controls. Cox proportional hazard analysis revealed that childhood TG level was a significant and independent predictor of cardiovascular disease events and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the fourth decade of life.
