Metabolic syndrome associated with cognitive impairment among elderly Chinese
The study aimed to investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome and cognitive impairment in 3216 elderly Chinese subjects of both genders from three districts of Chongqing City, metabolic syndrome being defined using modified ATP III definition and cognitive function being measured by Mini-Mental State (MMS) examination and the Activity of Daily Living tests. Among the study population, 22.8% met the criteria for metabolic syndrome and 14.6% those for cognitive impairment. 183 participants had both metabolic syndrome and cognitive impairment. Univariate analysis revealed that metabolic syndrome was significantly associated with cognitive impairment. After adjusting for current smoking, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus, multivariate logistic regression analysis confirmed metabolic syndrome to be significantly associated with MMS-defined cognitive impairment. In this elderly Chinese population, these results confirm an association previously observed in other populations.
