Metabolic syndrome prevalence increases in postmenopausal years. As calcium balance is modulated by menopausal status, this study was designed to investigate the association between calcium intake and metabolic syndrome when taking into account menopausal status. A total of 9341 participants from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001 and 2005 were included in the analysis. Calcium and energy intake were significantly higher in men than in women and lowest in postmenopausal women. Multivariate-adjusted logistic regression analysis revealed that postmenopausal women with calcium intake in the fourth quartile had a lower risk of having metabolic syndrome than those with calcium intake in the first quartile while no such association was detected in men or in premenopausal women. In conclusion, an inverse association between calcium intake and metabolic syndrome was observed in this Korean postmenopausal women population.
