The aim of the study was to investigate whether or not metabolic syndrome was related to depression and anxiety in 1215 male Japanese workers, metabolic syndrome being defined by the 2006 criteria of the International Diabetes Federation, and depression and anxiety by the Profile Of Mood States (POMS). Logistic regression analysis revealed that metabolic syndrome was significantly associated with depression, waist circumference contributing significantly to the relationship. Between the number of metabolic syndrome components and depression, there was a positive trend of borderline significance (P (trend) = 0.06). However, there was no relationship between metabolic syndrome and anxiety. In conclusion, metabolic syndrome appears to be associated with depression, but not with anxiety, in male Japanese workers.
