Responsiveness of metabolic syndrome to weight loss through a low-calorie lifestyle intervention
A total of 36 obese adults presenting with metabolic syndrome were enrolled in this study aimed to evaluate the rate of metabolic syndrome remission following a lifestyle change consisting of a brief low-calorie weight loss intervention. In total, 61% of patients responded to treatment with a mean 9.9% weight loss. Compared to non-responders, responders exhibited significantly lower baseline body mass index and fewer baseline metabolic syndrome variables. There was no difference between patient groups regarding weight loss or the proportion of patients losing ≥10% of initial body weight. The metabolic syndrome prevalence seems to be responsive to weight loss through low-calorie lifestyle intervention in a community population, although for some patients the recommended 10% weight loss may not be enough for metabolic syndrome remission.
