This population-based, single-centre, cross-sectional study – the CoLaus study – was conducted to: 1) assess the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) in the Caucasian population of Lausanne, Switzerland; 2) determine novel genetic determinants associated with CVRFs. A random sample of 6,188 extensively phenotyped Caucasian subjects living in Lausanne, and genotyped using the 500K Affymetrix chip technology participated in the study. Obesity was present in 15.7%, smoking in 27.0%, hypertension in 36.7%, dyslipidaemia in 34.2% and diabetes in 6.6% of the participants, the prevalence of hypertension, obesity and diabetes increasing with age, in both men and women. The prevalence of CVFRs was higher in men than in women. Based on these findings, the authors conclude that the prevalence of CVRFs is high in the Lausanne population, especially in men. The authors anticipate that the CoLaus study phenotype-genotype database will serve both as discovery and replication set to identify novel genes associated with classical and emerging CVRFs.
