Waist circumfererence and the metabolic syndrome are risk factors for developing elevated albuminuria - (13/06/06)
A 6-year follow-up of 2738 subjects from the D.E.S.I.R. study without microalbuminuria or diabetes at baseline revealed that a waist circumference (WC) ≥94 cm for men and ≥88 cm for women was an independent predictor for the development of microalbuminuria in both sexes whilst the presence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) predicted the development of microalbuminuria in men. In multivariate analysis, WC (either as continuous variable or categorical according to gender) was predictive of subsequent microalbuminuria. The authors conclude that measuring WC may help to identify non-diabetic subjects at risk of developing microalbuminuria and screening for albuminuria may be useful in MetS patients.
