Increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome in HIV-infected patients on antiretroviral therapy - (18/08/06)
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (ATP III) was significantly higher in 146 human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients on antiretroviral therapy for more than 6 months as compared with 156 body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy subjects. The presence of metabolic syndrome was associated with lipodystrophy, increased age, increased BMI, increased insulin resistance assessed by homeostasis model (HOMA) as well as reduced plasma adiponectin-to-leptin ratio. After multivariate analysis, the diagnosis of lipodystrophy and reduced HOMA insulin sensitivity were independently and significantly related to the metabolic syndrome.
