Metabolic syndrome and target organ damage in untreated essential hypertensives.
Metabolic syndrome and target organ damage in untreated essential hypertensives. This study suggests that target organ damage linked to hypertension is increased by the metabolic syndrome. Among 447 untreated middle-aged hypertensive patients, 135 had the metabolic syndrome and were otherwise similar (in terms of age, sex, duration of hypertension and blood pressure) to the 312 patients without it. Left ventricular hypertrophy, left ventricular concentric remodeling, and urinary albumin excretion were significantly higher in the metabolic syndrome group. The study also shows the high prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in this popul
