Metabolic syndrome is associated with early signs of organ damage in nondiabetic, hypertensive patients Among 354 untreated, nondiabetic patients with primary hypertension, a modified ATP III definition, with body mass index replacing waist circumference, yielded a 25% prevalence of the metabolic syndrome. After adjusting for age, gender and duration of hypertension, the presence of the metabolic syndrome was associated with a twofold greater risk for microalbuminuria (P=0.04), left ventricular hypertrophy (P=0.003) and increased carotid intima-media thickness (P<0.05).
