NCEP-defined metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and prevalence of coronary heart disease among NHANES III participants age 50 years and older.
Although diabetes is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, results of this study clearly showed that diabetes is a heterogeneous condition. In the NHANES III database, the prevalence of coronary heart disease among patients with diabetes was only increased among those meeting the NCEP-ATP III criteria for the metabolic syndrome (19.2%). Furthermore, nondiabetic individuals with the metabolic syndrome also showed an increased prevalence of coronary heart disease (13.9%).
