Executive Summary of the Third report of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults
Evidence accumulated over the last years that risk of coronary heart disease can be increased beyond traditional risk factors has led to the recognition of the Metabolic Syndrome as a major and prevalent cause of coronary heart disease by the NCEP-ATP III. In addition, NCEP-ATP III has proposed simple clinical variables to identify individuals at risk of having the Metabolic Syndrome, including abdominal obesity as estimated by the waist circumference, elevated triglyceride concentrations, reduced HDL-cholesterol levels, hypertension and an elevated fasting glycemia.
