Metabolic syndrome associated with faster disease progression and worse prognosis in patients with aortic stenosis (AS) The natural history of aortic valve sclerosis and its progression to AS share certain determinants with common forms of atherosclerosis. Since the metabolic syndrome predisposes to early atherosclerosis, the authors hypothesized that certain pro-atherogenic features of MetS could negatively influence disease progression and prognosis in patients with AS. Among 105 consecutive patients with at least moderate AS, 40 of whom had the metabolic syndrome, haemodynamic progression of AS was retrospectively assessed by the annualized decrease in valve area whereas event-free survival was defined as the absence of death or aortic valve replacement during follow-up (28 ± 13 months). In multivariate regression analysis, MetS was found to be an independent predictor of both AS progression and event-free survival.
