Although diabetes is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, results of this study clearly showed that diabetes is a heterogeneous condition. In the NHANES III database, the prevalence of coronary heart disease among patients with diabetes was only increased among those meeting the NCEP-ATP III criteria for the metabolic syndrome (19.2%). Furthermore, nondiabetic individuals with the metabolic syndrome also showed an increased prevalence of coronary heart disease (13.9%).
