The metabolic syndrome and total and cardiovascular disease mortality in middle-aged men
This is a prospective study with a median follow-up of 11.6 years of a population-based cohort of 1209 Finnish men aged 42 to 60 years at baseline (1984-1989). The results show that both cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality was increased in men with the Metabolic Syndrome as defined by the NCEP-ATP III and the WHO criteria. The relative risk of coronary heart disease mortality among men with the Metabolic Syndrome was 3.77 (95% Cl: 1.74 8.17). This study is the first prospective population-based cohort study reporting the association of the Metabolic Syndrome and cardiovascular disease mortality.
