Among 317 randomly selected children/adolescents from Northern Mexico, a family history of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity were present in 9.2%, 18.7% and 22.7%, respectively. Compared with children with negative family history, children with positive family history exhibited higher blood pressures, were more obese, and showed significantly higher fasting insulin and triglyceride levels along with a higher insulin resistance index assessed by homeostasis model analysis. Hyperinsulinemia was present in 48 (15.1%) children: 35 (72.9%) with and 13 (27.1%) without family history. Family history of diabetes but not high blood pressure and obesity were independently associated with hyperinsulinemia.
