Professor Jean-Charles Fruchart

Professor Fruchart’s scientific interest was initially focused on clinical biochemistry of lipoproteins, but progressively shifted towards lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis. Recently, his group is involved in the study of the transcription factors regulating the metabolism of lipoproteins and discovered the molecular mechanism of action of fibrates through activation of PPAR-alpha.
Professor Fruchart is currently Professor in Pasteur Institute of Lille, and University of Lille; President – Founder of Genfit; President of the Scientific Council – Founder of Cardialpha; President of Foundation “Coeur et Artères”; President of the International Society of Atherosclerosis.
Professor Fruchart has received many honours throughout his career: Member of the Academy of Medicine, Paris (1991); President of the Association for Research on Cholesterol (ARCOL) (1994-2003); "Great Gold Medal of Pasteur Institute" award (1994); “Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur” (1995); Member of the Academy of Pharmacy, Paris (1995); President of the Scientific Council of Lille University (1997-2000); Honoris Causa Doctor of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (1997); Visiting Professor of the University of Concepcion, Chili (1997); “Officier des Palmes Académiques (1998); “Grand Prix Kuhlmann”, Sciences, Agriculture and Arts Society of Lille (1998); “Prix Galien” of Pharmaceutical Research (1998); Secretary of the International Society of Atherosclerosis (2000); Honoris Causa Doctor of the University of Bucharest, Romania (2003); "Gold Medal of Foundation Giovanni Lorenzini" award (2003); “Officier de la Légion d’Honneur” (2005); President of the International Task Force for Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease (2003-2006).
Professor Fruchart has held the position of Chairman for the European Atherosclerosis Society Meeting in 1994 and of Scientific Chairman of the International Atherosclerosis Society Meeting in 1997. He initiated and chairs the Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes and Atherosclerosis congress in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008.
In 30 years of scientific career, Professor Fruchart has written more than 670 original research papers in peer-reviewed journals, together with many reviews, editorials and texts. He is a member of numerous scientific and academic associations and is a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals including Nature Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Lipid Research, Atherosclerosis, etc.
